Lords to host Hawks Sunday in qualifying match

BARRIE, Ont. – The Durham College men's volleyball team will have to win one more match in order to lock up a spot in the OCAA championship.

Durham took their final regular season match 3-1 in Barrie over the Georgian Grizzlies on Wednesday night to finish with a 16-4 record and in a three-way tie with Seneca and Fleming for first place in the OCAA east division. Unfortunately for the Lords with Seneca as the championship host, only one spot was up for grabs and the Fleming Knights held the tiebreaker.

Matt McGirr (Brampton, Ont.) added up nine kills, two aces and 16 digs. At the net Nick Coleman (Brooklin, Ont.) led with five blocks, while Erik Janssen (Hampton, Ont.) and Watson had two apiece.

Georgian's offence was led by Jason Grimm and Matt Kerr who had 12 and 11 kills respectively. Defensively they each had two blocks, although Darien Haynes led the Grizzlies with three.

Liam Gray was his team's leader at the service line with three aces.

The Lords will now return home to face the Humber Hawks (10-8) on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre in one of the league's four qualifying matches. The winner of the match will advance to the OCAA championship being hosted Feb. 25-27 by the Seneca Sting.
