HAMILTON, Ont. – After upsetting the No. 1 ranked Fanshawe Falcons on Friday the Durham College men's volleyball team were unable to knock off the host Mohawk Mountaineers as they brought home silver from the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) championship.
This is both the first silver and overall medal for the program since 2006.
"It's huge, the first medal for Durham College since 2006, so it's huge it's been five years of battling it out every year to finally make it," said fifth-year player
Mike Harper. "We beat the number one seed in semis – unfortunate we didn't win gold, but silver is a nice runner-up."
Mohawk swept the match on their home court 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-21).
Unfortunately for the Lords, with the Fanshawe Falcons hosting the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Championship (CCAA) in London, Ont. March 8-11, the Mountaineers and Falcons will be the only OCAA schools in attendance.
After the match
Andrew Dube (Uxbridge, Ont.) was named the player of the match. Both he and
Harrison Wood (Uxbridge, Ont.) were also named tournament all-stars prior to the medal presentation.
This was the fourth silver medal for the men's program, with Durham College's only championships coming in 1996 and 1988 (DII).
"For me I loved battling in the final and even ending up on the short end of the stick – losing – as long as we battled and showed up for that game it was okay by me," he said "A silver medal is still good."
