NORTH BAY, Ont. - The No. 4 nationally ranked women's volleyball team finished fourth at the OCAA championship following a straight sets loss to the St. Clair Saints in the bronze medal match on Saturday afternoon in North Bay. Set scores were 23-25, 19-25, 23-25.
Becoming a perennial powerhouse, the Lords finished the regular season with a perfect 18-0 record for the third time in four seasons. They entered the provincial tournament as the top seed from the OCAA east, but were knocked out of gold medal contention following a semifinal loss to the Humber Hawks the day prior. In the Saturday showdown, DC and St. Clair battled through three extremely tight sets.
Despite the loss, the Lords will no doubt be a favourite come next season with a host of returning players from a team that featured an All-Canadian, the OCAA east player of the year, two OCAA east first team all-stars, two OCAA east second team all-stars, and an OCAA all-rookie.
Â
• Named an OCAA championship all-star,
Althea Boncheff (Alliston, Ont.) once again led the Lords with a game-high 14 total points from 13 kills and one service ace.Â
• CCAA All-Canadian and OCAA east player of the year
Jessica Joensen (Newcastle, Ont.) combined with OCAA east second team all-star and player of the match
Allyson Terwillegar to add 10 and 9 points, respectively.
• Te-Anna Stephenson led the Saints with a team-high 12 points with 12 kills in the three set contest.
Â
• Fourth-year setter
Karlina Domingo (Pickering, Ont.) guided the Lords offence with 20 assists on the afternoon.
• Both Boncheff and Terwillegar led the Lords defensively with six digs apiece.
