OSHAWA, ON - In what marked the end of Durham College's varsity athletic home game schedule for 2023, the men's basketball team cruised to a 100-70 win over the Loyalist Lancers.
The Lancers kept it close all through the first quarter, even leading by as much as an 11-8 score. Two layups by Kanskie Simon (Pickering, ON) in the final 30 seconds of the quarter put the Lords up 23-21 after 10 minutes.
Durham created some separation in the second quarter, much thanks to Kevin Hamlet (Scarborough, ON) who went 3-for-3, including a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc in four minutes of play in the quarter. The Lords ultimately scored 25 points in the quarter, leading 48-36 going into halftime.
Coming out of halftime, it was Durham's dominance in the third quarter that put the game out of reach for the Lancers. While the Lords were scoring a game-high 27 points in the frame, they suffocated the Lancers defensively, holding them to only 10 minutes. Seven different Lords scored in the quarter, pushing the Lords to a 75-46 lead after 30 minutes of play.
Loyalist bounced back in the fourth quarter, scoring 24 points - the most they scored in any quarter in the game. Despite the signs of life, the Lords dropped another 25 points to win it by 30.
Hamlet was the team leader in points with 19, also adding four rebounds, one steal and one block. He shot 7-for-8 in the game, including 5-for-5 on three point shots.
Jasean Elliott (Toronto, ON) recorded a stat line of 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals.
In total, there were six members of the Lords that scored double-digit points in the game. In addition to Hamlet and Elliot, Simon contributed 12 points while Albert Abiodun (Toronto, ON), Rudy Fakih (Toronto, ON) and Mark Stoop all contributed 11.
O'Shane Taylor-Douglas (Scarborough, ON) was the playmaker in the game, assisting 11 times and generating three steals.
The Lords are back on the court one more time in the calendar year, traveling to Barrie on Friday for an 8:00 PM match-up against the Georgian Grizzlies. Durham are back at home on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 against the George Brown Huskies at 8:00 PM.
