Ontario Tech and Durham College to host Black History Month tournament

OSHAWA, ONT. – The Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre will host Allies in Equity – Removing Barriers, a Black History Month basketball tournament.

Durham College and Ontario Tech University will provide its facilities for the event, which takes place from February 2-3, 2024. Four teams will participate in the competition over the course of the weekend.

"It's exciting for both schools to bring the tournament to campus to kick-off Black History Month with the Allies in Equity – Removing Barriers Black History Month basketball tournament," said Scott Dennis, Director, Athletics & Recreation for Durham College. "Sport is powerful as it brings people together in a celebration of unity and diversity. Combined with the OCAA and OUA varsity games, the campus is gearing up for an action-packed weekend of sports."

Outside of on-the-court play, participants will engage in Black History Month workshops that include conversations on barriers in sport and how we might join hands to nurture inclusion in sports. On the court, student-athletes will have an opportunity to play the sport they love, while amplifying the importance of allyship in sport.

"We are excited at the opportunity to be a part of black history month on campus. Being able to create a platform where students can lead celebration and learning is something we are proud to support," said Scott Barker, Director, Athletics & Recreation for Ontario Tech. "Our hope is that the activities and games over the weekend will create spaces where the community is engaged and inspired to amplify support to our students."

Ontario Tech and Durham College men's basketball players will be on-site for dialogue with the participating student-athletes and will lead locker room tours.

Durham College and Ontario Tech are raising money all weekend for student bursaries within the BIPOC community. The Ridgebacks basketball teams host Waterloo on Friday at 6/8 PM, as well as Laurier on Saturday at 4/6 PM, while the Lords volleyball teams host Loyalist on Saturday at 1/3 PM.

Anybody who wishes to donate throughout the weekend can do so at any of the listed games. Fans not in attendance can donate online via Ontario Tech's Black Athlete Association for Marginalized Groups (BAA) or Durham College's Online Giving Form.
