OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College women's softball team put the finishing touches on a perfect regular season with a doubleheader sweep of the Humber Hawks on Monday evening.
After a special ceremony celebrating the graduating seniors, Jessica Greene started the game with an inside the park home run, racing around every base while the opposition outfield struggled to get the ball back to the catcher.
In the bottom of the third, Jessica Benz hit her league-leading 11th triple of the season to bring Peyton Jones and Grace Hearns home, extending the lead to three. This would be the fourth consecutive game in which Benz hit a triple.
Benz again picked up an RBI in the fifth, reaching on fielder's choice while Hearns scored her second run of the game.
Humber scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth but that wouldn't be enough to overcome the deficit as the Lords won 4-1.
Jones pitched the entire 7.0 innings, striking out an impressive 17 of 26 batters face. Over the course of the season, Jones issued 68 total strikeouts in 33.2 innings pitched, the second best total in the OCAA. Her K/9 of 14.14 however, is currently unmatched in the league.
In the second game, four runs in the opening frame for the Lords put them ahead quickly, and seven runs in the third inning essentially put the game away. Hannah Oke hit her second career home run in the inning, with the feat coming on her senior night.
Humber responded with a fourth inning run, but a single from Jocelyn Shelton to snd Greene home would trigger the mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth, earning a 12-1 win to end the season.
Jones went 3-for-3 at the plate as the designated hitter, scoring two runs and batting in one RBI. Hearns, Greene and Benz joined her as multi-run scorers in the game.
Morgan Salter picked up the win, pitching 4.0 innings and facing 17 batters. Chelsea Oke came to finish the job, striking out three.
The Lords end their campaign with a 24-0 record, their first undefeated regular season since 2011. With the season expanding in games played, 24 regular season wins is the program-high, surpassing the previous school record of 22 set last season.
Durham will now turn their attention to the 2024 CCSA National Championship in Carp, which begins on Friday, October 11. The Lords will open their schedule against the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees at 10:00 AM.
Following the national championship, Durham College will host the 2024 OCAA Women's Softball Championship from October 17-19.
