OSHAWA, ON - Wrapping up the 2023-24 OCAA regular season on Saturday afternoon, the Durham College men's basketball team will go into the playoffs on a 15-game winning streak after defeating the La Cité Coyotes 76-62.
Durham established a 7-2 lead to begin the game and despite eventually leading 18-10, the Coyotes went on a 7-3 run towards the end of the quarter to keep it close. After 10 minutes of play, the Lords led 21-17.
La Cité again kept it close in the second quarter, holding a usually dominant Lords offence to only 14 points. Having said that, the Coyotes were only able to put up 13 points of their own and the hosts went into halftime with a 35-30 lead.
In the third quarter, the Lords saw their offence explode with 25 points in 10 minutes of play. Five different Lords got on the scoresheet in the frame, led by Kevin Hamlet (Scarborough, ON) who scored eight points in the third, including grabbing four rebounds.
The Coyotes showed signs of life in the fourth quarter, having their most productive performance with 21 points. Although they held Durham to 16, they could not overcome the deficit and Durham came away with a 14-point victory.
O'Shane Taylor-Douglas (Scarborough, ON) finished the regular season with a double-double putting up 15 points and 12 assists along with five steals and four rebounds.
Hamlet led the Lords in points with 22, also grabbing nine rebounds and adding six steals and six assists. Glodi Kashala (Brampton, ON) tied Hamlet for the lead in rebounds with nine.
Jasean Elliott (Toronto, ON) shot an impressive 10-for-13, recording 21 points with four rebounds and two steals.
As the top seed in the east, let alone the OCAA, the Lords will play at home for as long as their season stays alive. Please stay tuned for an announcement on Monday featuring an opponent, date and time for Durham's qualifying match ahead of the 2024 OCAA Men's Basketball Championship.
