Durham to host final four as Lords come back to beat Sting

OSHAWA, ON - A huge fourth quarter comeback against the Seneca Sting sends the Durham College men's basketball team to the final four where the Lords will host the 2024 OCAA Men's Basketball Championship.

It was all Durham in the first half of the opening quarter in the quarter-final round. The Lords found themselves up 15-5 over five minutes into the game.

Things quickly unravelled as a 12-2 run by the visitors to tie it at 17 after one quarter to totally silence the crowd.

Seneca's momentum carried into the second quarter where the Lords got cold, shooting only 3-for-16 and ultimately trailing 34-30 going into halftime.

The Sting added to their lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Lords by another four to double their lead.

Everything changed in the fourth and final quarter. Jasean Elliott (Toronto, ON) threw down a dunk of the year candidate to send the crowd into a frenzy and the Lords would ride on that home court atmosphere the rest of the way.

Durham suddenly found their shooting game, shooting 50% as Elliott and Kevin Hamlet (Scarborough, ON) both went perfect from the field in the fourth.

While all of this is happening, Seneca was frozen cold at the other end of the court. They were shooting 17.6% at their end, including 0-for-8 from beyond the arc as the hosts defence just suffocated their opposition.

Holding Seneca to only six points in the final quarter, the Lords dropped 21 to take a seven point lead and win it 65-58.

O'Shane Taylor-Douglas (Scarborough, ON) was the team leader in points with 14, adding six defensive rebounds, six assists and a trio of steals.

Elliott and Hamlet both contributed 13 points. Hamlet registered seven rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocks while Elliott had seven rebounds, three steals, a block and an assist.

Mark Stoop (Oshawa, ON) was the team leader in boards with nine rebounds and Glodi Kashala (Brampton, ON) had eight coming off the bench.

As the highest seed, Durham College will be the final four host site as the Humber Hawks, George Brown Huskies and St. Clair Saints come to town.

The semifinals will be played at 5:00 and 7:30 PM on Saturday, March 2 at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre. The medal games will follow that on Sunday, March 3 with the bronze medal game at 2:30 PM and the gold medal game at 5:00 PM.

Stay tuned for further details to be confirmed ahead of Durham's semifinal against Humber.
