Desmond Rowley

After taking over the team in 2008, Rowley’s coaching style brought an entire new attitude to the Durham College men’s basketball program, which has unquestionably generated positive results on the court.

In 2013-14, the Lords had a turnaround season as they finished in the OCAA final four, after starting the year with one win and six losses.

Just a season later in 2014-15 they won the David Stewart Tip-Off Tournament for the first time since 2010. As hosts of the 2015 OCAA men's basketball championship the team won bronze, the programs first medal since 1997.

The 2010-11 season was also a banner year for the men’s basketball program. The team won their first David Stewart Tip-Off Tournament title in 13 years and went on to qualify for the OCAA championship. The team also hosted the 2011 CCAA national championship for the first time in school history.

In his first year with the team, DC went 16-4 during the regular season, their best record since 1997-98 season.

Rowley was no stranger to the Lords program as he had served four seasons as the men’s basketball assistant coach. Assisting with the Lords, the Ajax native has proven to be a great teacher of fundamentals of the game, incorporating individual skill along with team concepts to generate success out of the team.

Prior to joining Durham, Rowley coached at the high school level for Eastern Commerce in Toronto, Ontario. In eight seasons with Eastern Commerce, Rowley was instrumental in developing the program into a nationally recognized basketball powerhouse. He led the Saints to five TSSAA League Championships and two OFSAA Championships (1993 and 1994). Eastern Commerce also made it to the championship finals in 1998.

His ability to recruit, energize and teach the game is also going to bring success to the program.

Having worked in the community for the past number of years, Rowley has also developed plenty of positive relationships that will help him attract top talent to Durham College. Building a strong relationship with the local high schools is also one of Rowley’s priorities.
