Prior to joining Durham College Excellent was familiar with basketball in Oshawa, as he was an assistant coach with the Oshawa Power of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBL).

Before joining the Power, Excellent was a head coach with the Durham City Basketball Association (DCBA), an assistant coach at Pickering High School and at Monseigneur-de-Charbonnel, a French Catholic high school in North York.

Excellent spent the 2013-14 season as the senior boys basketball head coach of the St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Pickering where his team finished with a .660 winning percentage. Prior to St. Mary, Excellent spent the 2012-13 season as part of the coaching staff of the Ryerson Rams men's basketball team. In the summer of 2013, he had a successful campaign as a head coach in the Mississauga Power Pro-Am summer league.

During the summer of 2012, Excellent was part of the coaching staff of a Canadian Pro team touring China that competed against the top professional teams from Lithuania and China.

For four years, Excellent operated his own Basketball Academy that focused on improving players' individual skills. As a lifelong learner, he travels across North America to study the game, looking to gain knowledge and insights from the top basketball minds of the NBA, NCAA, CIS, CCAA and FIBA.

With over 10 years of involvement, Excellent has been participating at nearly all levels of basketball in Canada. He's been a trainer, camp instructor and had stints at the OBA, high school and AAU level.Â
