Broad and Rae-White named student-athletes of the week

OSHAWA, Ont. – Jessica Broad (Courtice, Ont.) and Maddie Rae-White (Cobourg Ont.) have been named the Durham College student-athletes of the week presented by Boston Pizza North Oshawa for the period ending March 1.

Broad, a marketing student, was recognized by the OCAA by becoming a first team all-star at the OCAA women’s volleyball championship banquet on Thursday. She finished the season fourth in the league with her .420 hitting percentage, ninth with 159 kills in 18 matches and 10th in the league with 213 points. She also led the Lords in the kill and point categories. This was the second straight season Broad was named a league all-star.

The first game at the championship against the Georgian Grizzles, Broad would lead all scorers with 11 kills, two aces and three blocks. In the second game against Cambrian she helped the Lords to victory with 10 kills, six blocks and five aces, which earned her player of the game honours. Against Humber in the championship game, Broad led the Lords in scoring with six kills. Following the match Broad was named to the championship all-star team.

Rae-White, a police foundations student, finished her season on a high note helping the Lords capture a silver medal after a nine-year medal drought. Rae-White has been an offensive weapon all season for the Lords and was a key piece to their success in the postseason. In the second game of the championship she made the most of her chances as she converted on seven of 12 attacks. In the gold medal game Maddie had three blocks, two aces and two kills to help the Lords capture a silver medal. Following the match she was named the player of the game, before also being named to the championship all-star team.
