OCAA Men's Volleyball: Durham defeated La Cité
3-0 OTTAWA – Set scores were a lot closer than they had hoped but the Durham College men's volleyball team managed to pull off a 3-0 sweep over the La Cité Coyotes on Saturday afternoon.
Durham won by scores of 25-20, 25-22 and 25-23. In the third and deciding set, the Lords trailed 23-21 but managed to win four straight points to earn the victory.
Five of Durham's six victories have come in straight sets.
With three blocks in the match and 87 in his career, Lords captain
Jeremy Hoekstra (Cobourg, Ont.) moved into second place on the Durham College all-time blocking charts, passing former teammate Brad Van Hartingsveldt. Dave McMann is the all-time blocking leader at the college with 206 in his five-year career.
Lords setter
Matthew Gibson (Oshawa, Ont.) had another outstanding outing as he had 36 assists in the win.
Petrus Kuypers (Haydon, Ont.) made the most of his opportunities as he converted on 11 of his 15 kills attempts.
Hoekstra and
Erik Janssen (Hampton, Ont.) had nine kills apiece while
Nick Coleman (Brooklin, Ont.) had six.
The Lords sit atop of the OCAA east region standings with a 6-0 record, one game ahead of the Fleming Knights (5-1).
Durham will make their return home on Saturday as they host the Canadore Panthers (3-3) at the CRWC.
