Men’s rugby returns to Durham College

OSHAWA, Ont. – On a weekend where Durham College was looking back and celebrating 50 amazing years, an old tradition returned to campus as the men's rugby team played their first game of the season.

Led by head coach John Watkins, the Lords earned a 33-29 victory over the Fleming Knights at Thompson Field in Raglan.

"It was a great to be back on the rugby pitch," said Durham College athletic director Ken Babcock. "There was a demand to bring rugby back on campus and to be able to watch them represent the college on Saturday was something special. It also never hurts when you pick up a win in your first match."

The Lords offence was spread out with Adam Stralak, Malcom Hooper, Jacob Gordon, Isiah Mottley and Zach Bedder all scoring tries. Eddie Oliveira had three conversions while Austin Brown had one to round out scoring for Durham.

Last year Fleming finish in first place in the OCAA east region with a 5-1 record, outscoring their opponents 209-90 while going on to win the OCAA silver medal.

The Lords will continue to train for their exhibition season with matches being scheduled throughout the year.
