OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College athletic department hosted the tenth annual academic luncheon on Tuesday, April 9 to celebrate the academic accomplishments of their student-athletes during the 2018-19 season.
This year the Lords had a program-high 44 student-athletes recognized with all-academic awards, beating the previous record of 38 set last year.
The Bert Dejeet Memorial Scholastic Award was presented to
Griffin Oliver (men's baseball – firefighting) and
Dekota Kirby (women's basketball – sport management) for having the top overall GPA for all student-athletes at Durham College. This marks back-to-back years that Kirby has received the award.
Devyn Fraser (women's volleyball – graphic design),
Nigel Buckley (men's soccer – fitness & health promotion),
Erin Dicaire (women's soccer – dental hygiene) and
Cory Lapointe (women's soccer – environmental technology) were each recognized with CCAA all-academic awards. The CCAA award is prestigious as it recognizes excellence in academics and athletics. To achieve the honour, a student-athlete must be named to their respective provincial all-star team in a CCAA sport and must achieve honour roll status.
The men's volleyball team finished with a 3.31 GPA, winning the top team GPA award. Since being introduced, no team has won the award twice. Women's softball won the inaugural award in 2015-16, followed by women's volleyball. Men's rugby captured the award in 2017-18.
