OSHAWA, ON - The Durham Lords men's rugby team took on the undefeated Humber Hawks on Friday afternoon at Thompson Rugby Park, defeating the visitors by a final score of 7-0.
DC kept the momentum from their last game, jumping out to an early lead in the first possession down the field. First-year fullback
Alex Shewchuk (Ottawa, ON) punched the only try of the match in on a great early possession from the Lords, while OCAA athlete of the week
Justin Taylor (Whitby, ON) added the extra two points with a precise convert through the uprights.
Following the Durham try the Hawks held onto the majority of possession for the rest of the half, but Durham's defense was able to keep the clean sheet and keep the score at 7-0 heading into the break.
The second half was very back-and-forth with both teams having great opportunities, but no one was able to score. Humber was putting on the pressure, but the Lords were able to make two amazing goal-line stops to keep the lead. Shortly after the amazing defensive plays from Durham, the referee abandoned the game early due to unsportsmanlike conduct from the visitors bench, leading to the Lords keeping the 7-0 result.
With this win, the Lords improve to 2-1 on the season, moving into a tie for first place in the league. The Lord's next game, which will be their regular season finale, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 23 when they travel to Barrie to take on a familiar foe in the Georgian Grizzlies.
Overall Record: 2-1 (W-L)
Conference Record: 2-1
Next match: Saturday, Oct. 23 @ Georgian Grizzlies (1 p.m. - Barrie, ON)
