King strikes out 12 as Lords sweep Bruins

OSHAWA, ON – At Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium on Wednesday evening, the Durham Lords swept the visiting Sheridan Bruins.

In the first game, Cruz Lopez (Brooklin, ON) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run with only one out on the board. Jacob Mahoney (Toronto, ON) followed it up with a single and eventually stole second. With Mason Wright (Courtice, ON) up to the plate, Mahoney scored his first run of the evening as Wright hit a double to bring the runner home.

After being hit by a pitch in the third inning, Ryan Mattes (Whitby, ON) stole second and advanced to third on an error but would be left on base to end the inning.

With the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Tyler Chong (Markham, ON) was hit by a pitch to advance all runners, including Erik Smith (Whitby, ON) from third to home to give the Lords a 3-0 lead.

Durham would score two more in the sixth inning, beginning with Eddie Borutskie (Oshawa, ON). Borutskie hit a triple and Chong hit an RBI double in the next at bat to make it a four-run game. Mattes swung for an RBI single, and Chong scored from second base.

Nick King (Whitby, ON) had a quick seventh inning limiting it to three batters for three outs. King pitched all 7.0 innings in the game, striking out 12 batters and shutting out the opposing Bruins. Of 24 batters faced, he only walked one.

In the second game, Mahoney put the Lords on the board in the first inning.

Following a scoreless second and third innings, Sheridan scored their first run of the day on an RBI double in the top of the fourth. The Bruins scored twice more in the inning to take their first lead of the doubleheader.

It would not last long however, as Mattes and King each scored on the same play I the bottom half of the inning to tie the game. In the next at bat, Cam Lugtenburg (Bowmanville, ON) scored on a groundout and Wendel Johnson (Whitby, ON) crossed home plate in the following at bat.

Fans saw scoring again in the seventh inning as the Bruins tied the game at five with a pair of runs.

In the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded and Smith representing the winning run on third base, a wild pitch gave him enough time to slide home and walk off the Sheridan Bruins in their final meeting of the regular season.

The Lords wrap up their regular season on Saturday, October 15 with a doubleheader at home against the Lambton Lions.
