Lords head to OCAA Championship on four game winning streak

OSHAWA, ON – The Durham Lords men's baseball team finish the regular season on a four-game winning streak, earning a pair of wins at home against the Lambton Lions.

The first inning would see the Lords build a mountain too high to climb for the Lions, scoring 11 runs. Blake Jolicoeur (Whitby, ON), Tyler Chong (Markham, ON) and Nick King (Whitby, ON) each scored two runs in the inning.

Cam Lugtenburg (Bowmanville, ON) hit a monster home run over the wall and into the trees in the opening frame with two runners on base to help the Lords go ahead early.

In the second inning, an RBI double hit by Jolicoeur advanced Brett Diamond (Newcastle, ON) home, and Jolicoeur scored himself later in the inning. Durham scored once in the third inning, with Lugtenburg scoring from first after being walked as Jacob Mahoney (Toronto, ON) doubled in the next at bat.

The Lords added seven more runs in the fourth inning and the game was eventually called by the umpires, finishing 21-0.

Jolicoeur went 4-for-5 at the plate with four runs and four RBI's. King was 3-for-4 at bat, scoring three runs and hitting for two RBI's. Lugtenburg stood out with a 3-for-3, four runs and five RBI's line while Mahoney was also a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate.

Ryan Mattes (Whitby, ON) began the game on the mound, striking out two batters over 2.0 innings. Erik Smith came in for the third inning, walking one batter and striking out another. Cruz Lopez (Brooklin, ON) was in for the fourth and final inning, striking out one.

In the second game, Lambton doubled with a runner on base to bring home their first run of the game and take an early lead.

In the bottom half of the first inning, runs scored by Chong, Lopez, Mattes, Erik Smith (Whitby, ON), Ethan Drews, (Clarington, ON), Mason Wright (Courtice, ON) and Eddie Borutskie (Oshawa, ON) put the Lords up big through one inning.

Durham scored nine more runs in the second inning and only needed to add three in the third inning to finish the game 19-1 in three innings.

Wright was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while five other Lords had multi-hit games including Borutskie and Mattes who also scored a trio of runs each.

Ben Spunde (Elmira, ON) pitched the entirety of the game, striking out three batters over 3.0 innings.

The Lords now have their sights set on the OCAA Championship at St. Clair College in Windsor, ON. Their first-round matchup will take place on Thursday, October 20 against an opponent TBD.
