OSHAWA, ON – The Durham Lords men's volleyball team roared back late in their home opener but would come up short as the Algonquin Wolves left town with a win in five sets.
Algonquin jumped ahead early, taking the first two sets 25-18 and 25-13.
In the third set, it was a back-and-forth affair, but Durham would scrape by with a 25-23 win to keep their evening alive. The Lords continued to storm back in the fourth set, winning 25-22 to tie it up and send the match to a deciding fifth set.
Even the fifth set would require extra serves with a 14-14 score line, but the Wolves came out on top with a 17-15 win to take the match 3-2.
William Egan (Cobden, ON) was a force offensively with 14 kills on 28 total attack attempts. Tyler Jegen (Calgary, AB) and Josh Padmore (Hamilton, ON) were next in line on the stat sheet with seven and five kills, respectively.
Kyle Travis (Courtice, ON) posted a massive 24 assists on the evening, with two huge blocks that had the crowd roaring. Travis and Jegen were tied for the team lead in digs with eight.
Durham served four aces on Friday evening, two from Michael Penney (Whitby, ON) and one each from Nandor Gallo (Oshawa, ON) and Travis.
The Lords now look ahead to their second game of the season where they'll travel to Toronto to take on the George Brown Huskies.
