ETOBICOKE, ON – The Durham Lords dropped two games to the OCAA-leading Humber Hawks on the road on Thursday evening.
Humber scored first to begin the evening after throwing out the first three Durham batters in the lineup. Grounding out with the bases loaded, the Hawks scored one run in the bottom of the first, leaving two runners on base when Thomas Aronowicz (Whitby, ON) threw his first strikeout of the game for the third out.
Nick King (Whitby, ON) led off the second inning with a single and eventually stole second base following a couple of strikeouts before being thrown out at third base to end the inning. The Hawks had a big second inning, generating two runs via RBI singles before picking up a third run due to an error to take a 4-1 lead.
In the third inning, Humber added one more run to take a four-run lead. King found his way on base with his second hit of the game in the fourth inning but was left on base to end the top half of the inning. The Hawks would add four more runs in the bottom of the fourth, including a two-man home run, taking a nine-run lead into the fifth inning.
Eddie Borutskie (Oshawa, ON) scored the first and only run in the game for the Lords. After hitting a single to start the fifth inning, Borutskie advanced to second on a popup hit by Cam Lugtenburg (Bowmanville, ON) and eventually advanced to third on an error by the catcher before making his way across home plate.
Durham battled hard in the seventh and final inning, loading the bases with no outs on the board. The Lords were not able to capitalize, ending the first game of the evening 9-1 in Humber's favour.
Following a Hall of Fame ceremony for four former members of the Hawks baseball program, game two begun and it was a pitchers' duel through two innings, before Durham took the lead in the top of the third inning.
Ishaan Persaud (Pickering, ON) advanced to home from third base on a groundout to score the first run of the game, and Borutskie would score his second run of the evening on a wild pitch to give the Lords a 2-0 lead. Humber responded in the bottom half of the inning on a two-RBI triple to tie the game back up.
The fifth inning proved to be the deciding frame, as one run scored by the hosts was enough to be the winner in a one-run game, with the Lords falling 3-2 in a closer battle.
