Lords hang on in late surge from Huskies for 97-93 win

OSHAWA, ON – The Durham Lords men's basketball team bounce back in their home opener with a 97-93 win over the visiting George Brown Huskies.

Durham outscored the Huskies 25-18 in the first quarter, and the scoring was distributed relatively evenly around the starters. Angelo Sarsonas (Scarborough, ON) and Kanskie Simon (Pickering, ON) each posted eight points and four rebounds in the opening quarter while Adam Hosseini (Toronto, ON) dropped seven points. As a team, the Lords shot an outstanding 60%.

Sarsonas led the Lords to a massive 32-point second quarter, scoring 12 points himself where he went 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. The third quarter was the most even of the four, with both teams scoring 22 points as the Lords would maintain the 17-point lead they took into halftime. Oshane Taylor-Douglas (Scarborough, ON) was a perfect 4-for-4 in the quarter, while Glodi Kashala (Brampton, ON) was key in taking back possession with four defensive rebounds.

In the fourth quarter, the Huskies did what they could to chip away at the deficit, but it would ultimately be too large to overcome. Beginning the final frame on a 9-0 run, George Brown found themselves within eight points. A pair of layups 14 seconds apart from Kashala and Hosseini put the Lords back into gear.

George Brown came as close as being within four points of the Lords with a steal and a layup to make it 95-91 with four seconds left on the clock. Hosseini was sent to the foul line after taking two seconds off the clock and drained them both, helping the Lords to a 97-93 win.

Sarsonas led the team in points with 25, in addition to eight assists, four rebounds and two steals. Hosseini finished with 24 points, five steals and three rebounds.

Kashala was a force in the paint, picking up 12 rebounds – including nine defensively. Taylor-Douglas and Simon both posted double-digit points with 18 and 16, respectively.

The Lords are back on the road for their next game on Wednesday, November 9 against the Fleming Knights in Peterborough.
