OSHAWA, ON – The Durham Lords women's basketball team battled their way to a 74-59 win over the George Brown Huskies in their home opener on Tuesday evening.
Brianna Morrison (Oshawa, ON) hit double-digit points for the third time in as many games before the first quarter was even finished, scoring 10 points in 10 minutes of play as the Lords led 18-16 through the first frame. George Brown bounced back in the second quarter, shooting a field goal percentage of 50% on 16 shots to take a 74-59 lead into halftime.
It was in the third quarter that the Lords had their strongest offensive and defensive showings of the night. Six defensive rebounds, five steals and a block for the Lords in the quarter helped hold the Huskies to an eight-point output. At the same time, the Lords scored 22 points which was the highest of either team in any quarter. Morrison and Emily Glendinning (Plattsville, ON) accounted for 16 of those points, scoring eight each.
The fourth and final quarter of the night was a closer one, but the Lords were ultimately able to extend their lead to 15 and come away with a 74-59 win to extend their undefeated streak through the first three games of the 2022-23 OCAA season.
Morrison finished the game with 28 points, nine steals, seven rebounds and a block, shooting 12-for-18 from the field. In 33 minutes of play, Glendinning finished with 16 points, three rebounds and two steals.
Off the bench, Kendra Oliver (Ajax, ON) recorded 12 points, four rebounds and a steal in 17 minutes of play. Durham more than doubled George Brown's rebound total in the game, 44-21. The Lords also benefited from an accurate shooting game, finishing 47.7% on two-point attempts and 55.6% from beyond the arc.
The Lords play the second of their four-game homestand on Friday, November 11 against the Loyalist Lancers.
