OSHAWA, ON – With a 68-48 win over the visiting Loyalist Lancers, the Durham Lords women's basketball team improve to a perfect 4-0 to begin the 2022-23 OCAA season.
Durham scored early and often in the first two and a half minutes, scoring the first eight points with a jump shot from Zharia Gallimore (Ottawa, ON) and a pair of threes from Emily Glendinning (Plattsville, ON) and Shay Littmann (Ajax, ON). The Lords led halfway through the opening quarter by a 15-2 score, but a 12-6 run by Loyalist closed the gap and made it a 21-14 game after 10 minutes.
The Lancers held Durham to only seven points in the second quarter, scoring 15 of their own to take a 29-28 lead going into halftime. The Lords responded with 23 third quarter points, led by seven from Brianna Morrison (Oshawa, ON) and took the lead back again to go ahead 51-42.
Scoring 17 points in the fourth quarter, Durham most notably held the Lancers to only six points in the fourth quarter – two of which came in the final five and a half minutes of play. What was mostly a close game would turn very lopsided in favour of the hosts, with the Lords winning by 20.
Improving her point total in every game to date, Glendinning hit 20 points for the first time this season in a team leading offensive showing with 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Flexing their strength in the paint, the Lords ultimately out-rebounded their opponents 49-28, led by Gallimore and Onika Leveridge (Scarborough, ON) who grabbed 13 and 10 boards, respectively. Leveridge led her squad in steals with six, giving the Lords a chance to take the ball back down the court.
Morrison posted a stat line of 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and a steal in the outing.
With a suffocating defensive style of play, the Lords forced Loyalist to go only 29.2% on field goals, including a 2-for-13 showing from beyond the arc for the Lancers.
Sitting on four wins and four games, the Lords currently sit on top of the OCAA East, tied with the Algonquin Wolves who also have eight points.
The Lords return to action on Tuesday as the Seneca Sting come to town for a 6:00 PM matchup.
