Lords defend home court in fourth quarter comeback

OSHAWA, ON – The Durham Lords men's basketball team win their fourth consecutive game with a 63-57 win over the Seneca Sting at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre.

Seneca went on an 8-0 run to begin the game, with Angelo Sarsonas (Scarborough, ON) putting the Lords on the board 4:04 into the game. Scoring six unanswered, the Lords shook off the early jitters and got themselves back into the game, eventually leading 18-15 by the end of the quarter.

Both teams traded off buckets early on in the second quarter before a layup by Oshane Taylor-Douglas (Scarborough, ON) was followed up with a quick three from Sarsonas to put the Lords up by six. A three point jump shot made by the Sting with 19 seconds left put them within five, but the Lords went into the locker room with a 33-28 lead.

The Sting came out for the second half on a mission, taking the lead back by a four point margin, leading 49-45 through three. Down 51-47 early in the final quarter, Durham scored 14 unanswered points to not only take the lead, but do so by double digits. This was enough to be the last of seven lead changes in the game.

Three starters for the Lords posted more than 10 points, including Sarsonas with 14, Kanskie Simon (Pickering, ON) with 13 and Taylor-Douglas with 11.

Taylor-Douglas had himself a night, with eight rebounds, eight assists, four steals and a block in addition to his 11 points. Simon came close to a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. In 23 minutes played, Isaiah Barton (Whitby, ON) grabbed eight boards. Mark Stoop (Oshawa, ON) led the team in blocks in his first appearance of the season with three.

Durham took advantage of 18 turnovers by the Sting in the game, scoring 17 points off turnovers. The Lords overpowered their opponents in the paint, outscoring them 38-20.

With their fifth win of the season, the Lords hold the top spot in the OCAA's east division.
