OSHAWA, ON - After dropping the first set against an undefeated Seneca Sting, the Durham Lords women's volleyball team powered back with three consecutive set victories to keep their own undefeated streak alive - starting the season with five wins.
The first set was tightly contested all the way through and neither side would lead by more than four points. Trailing 13-11, Durham called their first timeout and the sides would seemingly trade off points every other serve until it was 21-20 in the visitors' favour. Seneca ended the set on a 4-1 run to take it 25-21.
Following a minor delay between sets, the Lords tied the match with a 25-18 win in the second set. In the third set, Durham continued to find their rhythm and for much of the frame more than doubled Seneca's score. The Sting slowly chipped away at that deficit but it wouldn't be enough as the Lords took the third set 25-14.
Trying to keep their evening alive in the fourth set down 24-16, Seneca scored five consecutive points to keep the Lords on alert. A timeout by the Lords was enough to reset the group, scoring the next point to finish off the match in four sets.
Jessica Joensen (Brooklin, ON) and Durham College athlete of the week Katie Stewart (Gananoque, ON) each smashed 13 kills in the match, combining for 26 of the 46 kills scored by the team.
Brooke Young (Chestermere, AB) reached an even 100 assists on the season through five matches with 26 tonight.
The freshman Madison Harvey (Ajax, ON) served three aces from the line on Tuesday evening and blocking two shots at the net. Amanda Larsen (Toronto, ON) was the team leader in blocked shots with four, while Mia Hildebrandt (Winnipeg, MB) was not far behind with a trio of blocks.
Durham will hit the road with a three match road trip on the schedule, with visits to Ottawa to face Algonquin and La Cité before heading down to Scarborough to play the Centennial Colts.
