OSHAWA, ON – Durham College held its 50
th annual athletic banquet on Wednesday evening, with
Mia Hildebrandt (Winnipeg, MB),
Devyn Fraser (Uxbridge, ON) and
Malcolm Hooper (Orangeville, ON) earning 2021-22 Athlete of the Year honours.
Hildebrandt had an award-filled season as the East Division Player of the Year and scoring leader. The OCAA named her a first-team all-star and championship all-star in a season that ended with a bronze medal. Nationally recognized, Hildebrandt was a CCAA All-Canadian on the court and a CCAA All-Canadian Academic Award winner. In regular season and postseason combined play, Hildebrandt finished the season with 192.0 points, 120 kills, 42 blocks and 30 service aces. She also earned the "Stan Marchut" MVP award for the women's volleyball team.
Fraser, a dual-sport athlete, earned bronze medals at the CCAA Golf National Championship and OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship this season. She finished the volleyball season with 97 digs and 13 assists through 41 sets played. Also a standout student in the classroom, Fraser earned the "Bert Dejeet" Highest Overall GPA award, along with CCAA Academic All-Canadian and OCAA All-Academic Awards. At the 50
th athletic banquet, Fraser also took home hardware as Women's Golf MVP.
Hooper rounds out his season with the "William Avery Memorial" Overall Male Athlete of the Year Award, adding to a collection for the season which includes a spot on the OCAA Men's Rugby All-Star team, Durham Lords Men's Rugby MVP and Five-Year Award. Coming back from injury, Hooper continued to be a leader on and off the field and an integral contributor in the teams' bronze medal.
The banquet night was extra special, marking Durham College's 50
th time gathering postseason to recognize athletes and coaches alike for their accomplishments during the season, as well as the first time in three years that everybody was able to celebrate these achievements in person.
The night began with a video highlighting memories from the past 50 years, along with speeches from Athletic Director
Ken Babcock, President Don Lovisa and Dean of Students Tara Koski. Student-athlete
Glory Ezeude (Vaughan, ON) led the annual athletes prayer before dinner, and the rest of the night was spent recognizing incredible accomplishments for the 2021-22 season.
