OSHAWA, ON - Durham College extend their winning streak to five as the men's basketball team earn a 98-77 win over the Fleming Phoenix on Friday evening.
O'Shane Taylor-Douglas (Scarborough, ON) opened the scoring for the Lords with a jump shot just over a minute in. When Fleming responded with a three-point shot seconds later to take the 3-2 lead, that would be their only lead of the game. Kevin Hamlet (Scarborough, ON) hit a three 15 seconds later to take the lead again and the Lords would never look back.Â
Hamlet was perfect in the opening quarter, shooting 3-for-3 including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc in seven minutes of play, adding a block on the defensive end. Between Hamlet and Taylor-Douglas combining for 16 first quarter points, the Lords led 29-18 after 10 minutes.
Durham only furthered their lead in the second quarter on the backs of seven scorers. Scoring another 24 points, the Lords left 53-32 going into the halftime break.
Coming out for the third quarter, the Phoenix showed signs of life with a 7-2 run to open the quarter. That wouldn't last long though as the Lords scored the next 10 points in the game and eventually stretch their lead to 27 by the end of the third quarter.
Fleming had, what was by far, their highest scoring quarter of the night in the fourth as they dropped 31 points. However, the Lords kept pace with the visitors for much of the frame, scoring 25 points of their own to secure a 21-point victory.
Mark Stoop (Oshawa, ON) finished the night as Durham's leading scorer with 16 points, also adding eight rebounds and six assists.
Rudy Fakih (Toronto, ON) was incredibly efficient in 17 minutes, scoring 14 points and assisting five times. Kanskie Simon (Pickering, ON) and Hamlet each added 11 points to the scoreboard, while Taylor-Douglas scored 12 points with eight assists. Simon was one rebound short of a double-double, grabbing nine boards in the game.
Durham was able to take advantage of 26 Fleming turnovers on the night, scoring 22 points off turnovers. The Lords also proved to be incredibly dominant in the paint - scoring 64 points, exactly double that of their opponents from that area of the floor.
The Lords have one more home game before the end of the fall semester as they will host the Loyalist Lancers on Tuesday, November 28 at 8:00 PM.
