TORONTO, ON - The men's basketball team made it an incredibly close game towards the end despite foul trouble, falling 83-80 to the George Brown Huskies.
Kevin Hamlet (Scarborough, ON) opened the scoring only nine seconds in, hitting a 3-point shot for an early lead. The opening quarter either saw Durham in the lead or a tie game until the Huskies went on a 8-2 run halfway through for a 17-11 lead.Â
Durham kept it within six until the end of the first quarter, trailing 26-20 through 10 minutes.
It would prove to be a higher scoring game tonight, after leading 30-28 at halftime on Wednesday the Lords scored 39 in the opening half on Friday but still were behind 48-39 after 20 minutes.
The Lords chipped away at their deficit right out of the break, going on a 6-2 run in the opening minute of the third quarter. Julian Hinckson Jr. (Ajax, ON) scored seven points in a 24-point quarter for the Lords, cutting their deficit to six.
Durham continued their comeback attempt, eventually taking the lead early in the fourth quarter when a made free throw by Desson Spencer (Scarborough, ON) put the Lords up 72-71.
The remainder of the game would be within 1-3 points of either side, however free throws put the game away in favour of the hosts as George Brown would win by three.
George Brown had no problem taking advantage of foul trouble by the Lords throughout the evening, having 23 opportunities from the free throw line.Â
These 16 free points made it a difficult battle for the Lords down the stretch, however they proved they have that fight in them in a loss by only one possession.
Jasean Elliott (Toronto, ON) finished the night with 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. Oshane Taylor-Douglas (Scarborough, ON) was right behind him with 17 points, six assists, four steals and three rebounds.
Spencer registered a double-double, scoring 15 points with a team-leading 12 rebounds.
Durham are back on the court on Tuesday against the Georgian Grizzlies with tip-off scheduled for 8:00 PM.
