Late surge not enough as Lords fall to Colts

OSHAWA, ON – The Durham Lords men's basketball team showed a lot of fight on a night to recognize their graduating seniors, but ultimately fell short in an 86-76 loss to the Centennial Colts.

Durham found themselves trailing in a hurry as Centennial went on a 9-0 run in the first 2:20 to open the game. Fortunes would turn when Fioti Mabanza (Whitby, ON) made a layup to put the Lords on the board and begin a 9-0 run of their own to tie the game. Both sides went back and forth for the remainder of the quarter, with the Colts leading 19-16 after 10 minutes.

Centennial were able to create a more comfortable gap in the second quarter, outscoring the Lords by five to send the game into halftime with the visitors leading 43-35.

In the third quarter, the Lords struggled to find their rhythm, shooting only 6-for-18 in the frame. Centennial took advantage and piled on, extending their lead to 19.

With 10 minutes left to play, the Lords began to crawl back as they dropped a game-high 26 points in the quarter. Kanskie Simon (Pickering, ON) and Desson Spencer (Scarborough, oN) were both hot, scoring eight points each in the final stretch of the game.

There was potential for a thrilling ending in the final four minutes where the Lords went on a 12-0 run to bring themselves within four points. Intentional fouls to save the clock only went so far as the Colts took advantage of their free throws, going a perfect 6-for-6 in the final 22 seconds to win it 86-76.

Simon finished the night as the team leader in points with 20. Additionally, he recorded four rebounds, two steals and a block. Mabanza put up 16 points, four steals, trios of rebounds and assists and a block.

In 25 minute of play, Spencer shot 7-for-10 for 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to complete the double-double.

The Lords have two games left on their regular season schedule and will make the trip to the nation's capital for both. Durham will play Algonquin on February 18th at 6:00 PM before heading 15 minutes across Ottawa to finish the season against La Cité on February 19th at 1:00 PM.
