OTTAWA, ON - After seeing a hot start quickly vanish, the Durham Lords men's basketball team had their hard work pay off in the second half with a comeback win over the Algonquin Wolves.
Durham scored the first 10 points in the game before a three-point shot made by the Wolves put an end to the hot run. Angelo Sarsonas (Scarborough, ON) had already recorded six points 2:37 into the game.
After Algonquin surged for a 10-2 run, things went from bad to worse for the Lords as the Wolves could not stop scoring and eventually led 30-21 at the end of the first quarter despite not scoring in nearly the first three minutes of the game.
The Wolves' shooters cooled off a little in the second quarter, only scoring 17 points compared to Durham's 18. Five different Lords scored in the second, including Adam Hosseini (Toronto, ON) who scored seven.
Going into halftime, the Wolves led 47-39.
Durham had a massive third quarter on the backs of Mark Stoop (Oshawa, ON) and Fioti Mabanza (Whitby, ON) who combined for 14 points. While the Lords scored 25 points, they also tightened up on defence to hold the Wolves to only 11 points. The 14-point margin gave the Lords a 64-58 lead.
Both teams found their offensive groove in the fourth quarter as both surpassed 20 points. The Lords had high efficiency shooting in the quarter, with Sarsonas, Stoop, Kanskie Simon (Pickering, ON) and Desson Spencer (Scarborough, ON) shooting for a combined 9-for-11.
Algonquin outscored the Lords 23-21 in the final quarter, but that would not be enough to close what was a 6-point gap and the Lords came out on top 85-81.
Sarsonas was the team leader on the night with 20 points, three assists, two rebounds and a steal.
Spencer came off the bench to score 16 points, along with four rebounds.
Stoop, Hosseini and Simon rounded out the five Lords with double-digit points, scoring 14, 13 and 10, respectively. Simon was also the team leader in rebounds with seven, while Stoop grabbed six.
The Lords finish off their 2022-23 regular season schedule in Ottawa on Sunday with a trip to La Cité.
