OSHAWA, ON – The Durham College Department of Athletics is proud to recognize 53 student-athletes for their academic achievements in the 2022-23 year.
The Bert Dejeet Memorial Award is an annual honour earned by a female and male student-athlete for having the top overall GPA among all their athletic peers at Durham College. Devyn Fraser (Women's Volleyball & Golf) from theAdvertising - Digital Media Management program took home the award among the women, while Ryan Mattes (Men's Baseball) from the Behavioural Science - Honours Bachelor program took home the award among the men.
For Fraser, this is her Durham College student-athlete record third consecutive semester with a 5.0 GPA. She goes back-to-back after earning the Bert Dejeet last year.
Furthermore, three student-athletes received CCAA Academic All-Canadian Awards. Katie Stewart, Mia Hildebrandt and Jessica Joensen were honoured with the CCAA's most prestigious student-athlete award, epitomizing their mandate of recognizing excellence in academics and athletics. To achieve this honour, a student-athlete must be named to their respective conference all-star teams in a CCAA sport and achieve honours standing. This is Stewart and Hildebrandt's second consecutive year earning the award.
Every year Durham College recognizes the team with the highest overall GPA collectively among all the teams' players. The women's volleyball team was named with that honour on Tuesday afternoon. Since being first awarded eight years ago, this is the fifth time that the women's volleyball team has won the Top Team GPA award, with the first three coming in 2016-17, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2021-22.
