OSHAWA, ON - In a highly anticipated matchup between two of the top teams in Ontario, the Durham College men's basketball team made a massive statement against the George Brown Huskies with a 90-64 win.
The Lords came into this game on an eight game winning streak, now extending it to nine. Their last loss, and only loss of the season, came on November 3 in Toronto against this very Huskies team when the Lords fell 83-80.
Coming into the game, the Lords sat first in the OCAA weekly rankings and seventh in the CCAA national rankings, while the Huskies were not far behind at number four in the OCAA and 15 in the CCAA.
Kevin Hamlet (Scarborough, ON) scored only 16 seconds in to open the scoring and Mark Stoop (Oshawa, ON) made a big dunk only moments later to put the Lords up by four on the first two possessions.
A 13-2 run by the Huskies gave them their first lead of the game and would be a major contributing factor in putting the visitors ahead 23-21 after 10 minutes of play.
The second quarter was just as back-and-forth as its predecessor, however it favoured the Lords this time as the hosts outscored George Brown by four to take a 41-39 lead into the halftime break.
Durham had five different scorers in the third quarter, led by O'Shane Taylor-Douglas (Scarborough, ON) who put up seven points and four assists in the frame as the Lords got their second half off to a big start, holding George Brown to a game-low 12 points in the third.
The fourth quarter had the crowd on their feet to end the night. The Lords only conceded 13 points in the final quarter, while at the other end of the court the Lords offence exploded with 28 points.Â
Mekhi Gibson (Ajax, ON) and Tayshaun Agyarko (Brampton, ON) came off the bench in the fourth, making their presence known with a combined seven points in only a couple of minutes of action.
Over the course of the game, Taylor-Douglas finished with 26 points, nine assists, six rebounds and six steals.
Stoop was one rebound short of a double-double, completing the night with 20 points, nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and a trio of blocks.
Breaking down the stats, the Lords benefited from efficient shooting with a 48.1 field goal percentage to George Brown's 35.7%. The Lords took advantage of 17 turnovers gifted by the Huskies, scoring 20 points off turnovers.
Durham were seemingly unstoppable under the rim, scoring 52 points in the paint on the night.
Extending their winning streak to nine games, the Lords sit atop the OCAA with 22 points - four ahead of the next best team.
As their season begins to wind down, the Lords hit the court in Scarborough on Saturday, January 20 at 3:00 PM against the Centennial Colts.
