Game Recap: Men's Baseball |

Offence on full display in the Lords’ home opener

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College men's baseball team hosted a doubleheader against the Seneca Sting on Tuesday at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium, where the two teams ended up splitting the two-game series.

Fans were treated to a lot of offence as the teams totaled for 48 runs. The Sting won game one by a score of 13-10 with the Lords bouncing back with a 21-4 win in game two.

Seneca got off to an early start in game one and found themselves with a 5-2 lead heading into the bottom of fifth.

With the bases loaded and Lords freshman Jalal Latif (Oshawa, Ont.) stepping up to the plate for his first OCAA plate appearance, the fans were waiting for something special to happen. Swinging at the first pitch, Latif did not disappoint as he sent the ball over the left-field fence, giving the freshman a grand slam.

The Lords put up eight runs in the inning, giving them an 10-5 lead. Unfortunately, this wouldn't stand as the Sting followed that inning up with an eight-run inning of their own, taking game one by a score of 13-10.

It did not take long for the lords to bounce back, however.

Evan Chong (Markham, Ont.) helped lead the Lords to a 21-4 victory though five innings in the back half of the doubleheader. He had three hits and seven RBIs in four at bats, two shy of the OCAA record.

Connor Rodwin (Burlington, Ont.), Griffin Oliver (Oshawa, Ont.), Zach Rivers (Oshawa, Ont.) and Ryan Mattes (Whitby, Ont.) also had an impressive night at the plate with two hits apiece.

Charles Roy (Toronto, Ont.) was on the mound for the Lords for game two, getting his second win of the season. He allowed just one hit and no earned runs through 3.2 innings. Roy struck out five Sting hitters.

The Lords (3-1) will make the long bus trip to Sault Ste. Marie this Saturday for a doubleheader against the Sault Cougars at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sault is 0-2 to start the season with back-to-back losses to St. Clair.
