OSHAWA, Ont. – It was a jam-packed Saturday for Durham College's varsity teams, with the OCAA fall sports schedule in full swing. The day's highlights included the defending OCAA champion women's rugby team kicking off their season with three victories, the baseball team sweeping their two-game series against the Sault Cougars, and the soccer teams clinching a sweep over the St. Lawrence Vikings.
Women's Rugby
The Durham Lords began their quest for a third consecutive OCAA gold medal with three wins in Brampton. The team defeated Conestoga (25-7), Seneca (48-0), and Humber (47-19).
Twelve players contributed to the scoresheet, demonstrating a balanced offensive effort throughout the day.
Shay Morris (Ajax, Ont.) led the way with five tries, while freshman Amber Edgerton (Uxbridge, Ont.) added four.
The Lords have now won 39 consecutive games, with their last loss dating back to the 2021 gold medal match against Humber. Next week, they'll head to Kingston looking to continue their winning streak in four matches hosted by the St. Lawrence Surge. Durham will face Algonquin/St. Lawrence on Saturday and Loyalist/Fleming on Sunday.
Women's Soccer
After a tough opening weekend, the Durham College women's soccer team bounced back with a commanding 6-0 shutout over St. Lawrence Surge.
Dominating from start to finish, the Lords outshot the Surge 39-7.
Alexis Bayley (Whitby, Ont.) scored her first career OCAA goal just one minute into the match, followed by
Laura Antunes (Pickering, Ont.) netting her second of the season 11 minutes later.
CCAA All-Canadian
Sage Thomas-Roberts (Toronto, Ont.) scored twice in the second half, with
Erin Michalicka (Pickering, Ont.) and
Kate Honsberger (Pickering, Ont.) each adding a goal.
Keyara Lindell (Whitby, Ont.) made three saves to secure the clean sheet.
Durham now holds a 1-2-0 record, while St. Lawrence falls to 0-2-0. The Lords will continue their road trip on Sunday against the undefeated Algonquin Thunder (2-0) in Ottawa.
Men's Soccer
Despite being two men down after receiving red cards, the Durham College men's soccer team managed to secure a 3-2 victory over the St. Lawrence Surge on Saturday in Kingston.
With this win, the Lords sit atop the OCAA East Region standings with a 2-0-1 record, while St. Lawrence drops to 0-2-0. The victory sets up a showdown on Sunday against the undefeated Algonquin Thunder (2-0-0) in Ottawa.
After conceding a 2-0 lead,
Jaden Grant (Oshawa, Ont.) scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute, burying a penalty kick in the bottom left corner.
Nathan Blowers (Oshawa, Ont.) and Chris Badibengi (Oshawa, Ont.) netted first-half goals five minutes apart, giving Durham an early 2-0 lead.
Garrett Werner (Ajax, Ont.) allowed two goals on seven shots on target in the win.
Baseball
Durham College's baseball team spoiled Sault College's homecoming with two dominant victories over the Cougars, winning 14-1 and 15-3. Both games ended in the fifth inning.
Durham currently leads the OCAA with 76 runs scored, having scored 10 or more runs in five out of six games.
In game one,
Connor Rodwin (Burlington, Ont.), Tristan Deslauriers (Oshawa, Ont.), and
James Aronowicz (Whitby, Ont.) each hit home runs. In game two,
Evan Torres (Whitby, Ont.) and
Ethan Service (Oshawa, Ont.) added homers of their own.
Griffin Oliver (Oshawa, Ont.) extended his hitting streak to six games, going 4-for-6 with four runs and two RBIs.
Charles Roy (Toronto, Ont.) and
Mark Baxter (Oshawa, Ont.) each pitched complete games to secure the wins.
Durham is off to a strong 5-1 start this season but will face tough competition next weekend with undefeated St. Clair (4-0) and Lambton (4-0) visiting on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Men's Rugby
Durham College's men's rugby team suffered their first OCAA regular season loss since 2021, falling 36-21 to Conestoga on Saturday morning.
Despite several scoring opportunities, the Lords were held to just three tries by a resilient Conestoga defense.
Hudson Young of the Condors led all scorers with 14 points, including one try, one penalty kick, and three conversions.
