Lords clinch spot at nationals after semifinal win over Saints

ETOBICOKE, Ont. - The Durham Lords are heading to the gold medal game at the OCAA Men's Basketball Championship for the first time since 1997 after a thrilling 85-80 victory over St. Clair.

Durham set the tone early, outscoring St. Clair 29-22 in the opening quarter. Despite a sluggish third quarter where the Lords managed just nine points, they maintained composure and responded in the fourth with a 23-point effort.

St. Clair made a late push, briefly cutting the deficit to three, but Durham's defensive execution and late-game shot-making ensured the victory.

Mark Stoop, the player of the game for the Lords, was a force on both ends of the floor, recording 22 points, nine rebounds, and five blocks while hitting four three-pointers. His defensive presence in the paint was key in slowing down St. Clair's attack.

Javade Marne helped lead the charge 22 points, shooting an efficient 9-for-13 from the field while adding six rebounds and three steals. Marne's ability to attack the basket and finish through contact gave Durham a much-needed spark, especially in a fast-paced first half where the Lords put up 53 points.

Caleb Carter added 14 points off the bench, hitting three three-pointers, and contributed two rebounds and an assist. Miles Hall stuffed the stat sheet with ten points, six rebounds, and five assists, providing crucial playmaking and defensive stops.

Rashane Smith finished with eight points and five rebounds, while Jasean Elliott collected seven boards and three steals to keep St. Clair from gaining second-chance opportunities.

The Lords forced 18 turnovers and turned them into 22 points while dominating inside with 40 points in the paint. Their defensive intensity led to 10 steals and six blocks, disrupting St. Clair's offensive rhythm.

With this win, Durham advances to the OCAA championship game with a chance to claim their first provincial title since 1997.

The Lords will play the Humber Hawks at 3:30 PM at the Humber Athletic Centre at their North Campus.
