Panchan, Ropp and Omelanchuk named athletes of the week
 
OSHAWA, Ont. – Lindsay Panchan (Ajax, Ont.), Rebecca Ropp (Milverton, Ont.) and Caitlyn Omelanchuk (Whitby, Ont.) have been named the Durham College student-athletes of the week presented by Boston Pizza North Oshawa for the period ending Oct. 25.
 
Panchan, a second-year sport management student, had a double-double in each of the women’s basketball team’s opening games of the OCAA season. In the Lords season opener at Georgian College she had 16 points and 10 rebounds in the 45-43 victory. On Saturday at George Brown, Panchan scored 36 points, while pulling in 24 boards as they defeated the Huskies 82-72.
 
The women’s basketball team now returns to the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre for their home opener against the Seneca Sting on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
 
Ropp, a first-year early childhood education student, was amongst the tournament leaders in multiple categories during the OCAA women’s softball championship hosted at Durham College over the weekend. Ropp finished the championship with .538 batting average and five RBIs, which included her going 5-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs in the Lords 11-3 victory over the Fanshawe Falcons on Friday night. In the championship game she was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. After the final Ropp was also named a championship all-star.
 
Omelanchuk, a first-year police foundations student, was named the championship MVP after the Lords won their first OCAA championship since 2011 on Saturday afternoon, a 7-3 win against the Humber Hawks. Omelanchuk led the tournament with a .700 batting average and seven RBIs at the plate. She was also tied for the most doubles over the two-day tournament with three. On the mound she earned all three wins for Durham, finishing third in the tournament with four strikeouts and 3.17 ERA over 17.2 innings pitched.
