Lords fail to pull off an upset over Algonquin

Lords fail to pull off an upset over Algonquin

OTTAWA – The Durham College men's basketball team went down in defeat to the Algonquin Thunder on Friday night losing by a score of 91-72 in Ottawa, Ont.

The win marked Algonquin's 12th straight as the No. 2 ranked team in the country remained undefeated.

The Lords defence failed to find a way to stop Algonquin's top scorers Njuguna Waiganjo and Derrek Mooney as the pair combined for 39 points in the victory.

Durham's leading tandem of Ajahmo Clarke (Oshawa, Ont.) and Eric Smith (Ajax, Ont.) scored 23 and 18 points respectively, but did not get the backing from the rest of the line-up as they combined for more than half of the team's offensive production.

With ten points on the year, the Lords (5-8) find themselves in a three-way tie for seventh place with the St. Lawrence Vikings (5-7) and La Cite Coyotes (5-6). All three teams trail Loyalist (6-7) for the final playoff spot in the OCAA east region.

Durham and La Cite will square off on Saturday afternoon in Ottawa with tip-off starting at 1 p.m. If the Lords hope to make a late-season push for the playoffs, they will have to claw out a victory over the Coyotes.

Tonight's loss marked Durham's first of 2014 as they picked up wins over Georgian and George Brown to start the year.
