Strong pitching propels Durham to victory OCAA Women's Softball: Durham defeated Fanshawe 5-3 OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women's softball team carried a combined no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh inning en route to a 5-3 victory over the Fanshawe Falcons on Saturday.
Samantha MacCallum (Whitby, Ont.) got the start for Durham, pitching five hitless innings and allowed only one walk. She would turn over the ball to
Lydia Kalbfleisch (Moorefield, Ont.) who was perfect in the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh, Fanshawe batters would break up the no-hitter. In fact, they posted three hits and cashed in three runs to set up an interesting finish. With the tying run on first base, a sharp line-drive was hit to the Lords' short stop who made a leaping grab to end the game.
All of the Lords five runs came in the fifth inning off of Fanshawe starting pitcher Sandra Cowan. The inning was capped off with a
Justine Pike (Whitby, Ont.) triple to right-centre field, in which she would score on after a throwing error.
Tara Robinson (Mount Albert, Ont.) had a big day at the plate going 2-for-2 with a walk.
Durham is now one of three teams in the OCAA with only three losses, as they hold a 7-3 record. St. Clair (11-3) and Conestoga (10-3) are the other two clubs ahead of Durham in the standings.
The Lords will look to knock off the Saints on Sunday afternoon on campus. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
