Hardware handed out at OCAA softball championship

OSHAWA, Ont. – Friday morning the OCAA handed out league awards at the softball championship banquet at the Quality Hotel and Conference Centre in Oshawa, with St. Clair's Skyler Patteson being named the conference's player of the year.
 
Patteson finished the season at the plate with a .488 batting average, one home run and 37 runs scored for the Saints. She led the league in triples with eight, RBIs with 28, runs scored and total bases with 68.
 
Allison Telfer, also of the Saints, was named the pitcher of the year. With 96 innings pitched she finished the season with a 13-3 record, 38 strikeouts, 34 earned runs and a 2.48 ERA.
 
The lone Durham College athlete to receive an award at the banquet was Caitlyn Omelanchuk (Whitby, Ont.). The first-year police foundations student was a named an OCAA all-star. Omelanchuk finished the season with the top batting average, .400, on the Lords. In 50 at bats she had 20 hits and 15 RBIs.
 
On the mound she was 7-4 with 70.2 innings pitched, 39 earned runs, 49 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.86 over 12 games.
 
Conestoga's Brittany Bell was the batting champion with a .554 batting average over 18 games. She had 31 hits in 56 at bats, 27 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .964.
 
Also from the Condors, Laura Rumph was named the OCAA rookie of the year. Rumph was second on the Conestoga Condors in batting with a .440 average over 84 at bats, the most of any Condor this season. She had 37 hits in 24 games, which included seven doubles and seven triples. Rumph also had 16 RBIs.
 
Fanshawe's Catherine Arthur received the coach of the year award after leading the Falcons to the championship with a 17-7 record, good enough for second place in the OCAA.
 
Action gets underway at the championship at noon with the host Durham College Lords taking on the St. Clair Saints. The Fanshawe Falcons then take on the Humber Hawks at 2 p.m.
