OSHAWA, Ont. – Highlighted by a third quarter dunk by
Julian Hinckson Jr. (Ajax, Ont.) - the Durham College men's basketball team showed a vast improvement from their season opener as the Lords topped the Georgian Grizzlies 81-67 on Thursday.
A slow start had the Lords neck-and-neck with the Grizzlies, down 18-16 after the opening 10 minutes, but by halftime Durham had taken a one-point lead – 39-38.
In the third quarter they outscored Georgian 21-11 – piggybacking momentum from Hinckson Jr.'s dunk – to take a 60-49 lead into the fourth quarter. On a normal night a dunk may not have done much, but he woke up the quiet crowd at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre. The team seemed to feed off the buzz in the gym as they also outscored the Grizzlies in the fourth to earn their 81-67 victory and get back to .500.
Brandon Halliburton (Brampton, Ont.) led Durham with 31 points, followed by Hinckson Jr. with 16 points.
Fioti Mabanza (Whitby, Ont.) was the final Lord to finish in double-digit scoring with 14 points, while also finishing with a game-high nine boards.
Connor Laronde led the Grizzlies with 24 points, followed closely by Tyler Vanessen with 23 points. Vanessen finished with a team-high six assists.
Durham's next game is Saturday at home when they host the Canadore Panthers. Tip-off is 6 p.m. at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.
