OSHAWA, Ont. – In dramatic fashion, the Durham College women's softball team won both games of their doubleheader against the Conestoga Condors on Tuesday with walk-off hits.
Ashley Black (Waterloo, Ont.) threw a complete game shutout in a pitcher's duel to open the night, which the Lords won 1-0. Black allowed only three hits over seven innings, while striking out four.
In the loss, Jensen Chapman allowed four hits and an earned run over 6.2 innings. She struck out two and walked three batters.
Black led off the bottom of the seventh by being hit by a pitch, putting her on first base.
Alanna Stanoev (Whitby, Ont.) came in as a pinch runner and was advanced to second by a sacrifice bunt by
Justine Pike (Whitby, Ont.).
Jaimie Clarke (Elmvale, Ont.) eventually drove Stanoev home with a single to win the game.
The second half of the doubleheader did feature more offence, starting with the Condors getting on the board in the third inning with a pair of runs.
Conestoga increased their lead in the top of the fifth, but Durham answered in the bottom half to trail by two.
Again, in the top of the sixth the Condors kept pressing as they put two more on the board to lead 5-1, but the Lords bounced back with two of their own to cut the lead to 5-3 heading into the final inning.
First-year pitcher
Sara Pesonen (Mississauga, Ont.) allowed a single to open the seventh, but then retired the side as Durham entered the bottom half needing another late rally to win.
Chapman walked the first two batters before a single by
Sarah Seifried (Drayton, Ont.) brought home
Caleigh Coels (Duncan, B.C.) and
Rebecca Ropp (Milverton, Ont.).
An error on the play allowed Seifried to make her way to third, with
Samantha MacCallum (Whitby, Ont.) coming in to pinch run. Black came up and walked-off the game hitting the first pitch of her at bat to right field for a single and the win.
Pesonen allowed five runs on 10 hits and a walk over seven innings, while striking out three. Chapman had four earned runs on six hits and six walks over six innings.
