Lords lose first conference game of the season, split with Fanshawe

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women's softball team is no longer undefeated in regular season play after splitting their Sunday doubleheader with the Fanshawe Falcons.
 
Durham opened the day with a 4-3 victory before falling 8-2 in the second half of the doubleheader at Durham Field.
 
Samantha MacCallum (Whitby, Ont.) earned the win on the mound, allowing one run over five innings on six hits and a walk. Sara Pesonen (Mississauga, Ont.) threw two innings in relief to close the game. She allowed two runs on four hits, while striking out two.
 
Lydia Kalbfleisch took the loss for Fanshawe in her seven-inning performance. She allowed one earned run on five hits and three walks, with three strikeouts.
 
At the plate catcher Justine Pike (Whitby, Ont.) who was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, a run scored and a walk, led the Lords offence. Melissa McKnight (Brampton, Ont.) had an RBI triple and scored a run for Durham.
 
Fanshawe's top batter was Kady Hawkins who was 2-for-4 with an RBI triple and run scored.
 
In the second game Ashley Black (Waterloo, Ont.) went six innings in her first loss of the 2016 season. She allowed eight runs on 10 hits, while striking out four. Pesonen pitched one inning of relief, allowing no hits.
 
Alanna Gilmour earned the 8-2 victory for Fanshawe by allowing only two runs on seven Durham hits, while striking out three over seven innings.
 
McKnight was a leader at the plate against for the Lords by going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Kalbfleisch was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Falcons offence.
 
Durham will now take tomorrow night off as they look ahead to Thursday's home doubleheader against the Humber Hawks. The first pitch of the opening game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Durham Field.
