NORTH BAY, Ont. – Brandon Halliburton's (Brampton, Ont.) three-pointer with 3.4 seconds to go proved to be the difference on Saturday night as the Durham College men's basketball team walked away with an 85-82 victory over the Canadore Panthers.
With 12.1 seconds to go the game was tied 82-82, but Halliburton was able to get off a clean three with just seconds to go. With the Panthers looking for a three of their own to send the game to overtime,
Funsho Dimeji (Malton, Ont.) intercepted a pass to kill the final seconds and give Durham the victory.
Dimeji and Halliburton led the Lords in the back-and-forth game, with 25 and 19 points respectively. Dimeji also had a team-high eight boards.
Dondre Huggins (Scarborough, Ont.) continued his second half dominance as he put up his first 20-point night since joining the Lords this season.
Durham trailed by one after ten minutes, but by halftime led 39-34. A Canadore comeback saw the Panthers tie the game 57-57 heading into the final quarter – where Halliburton's three was the difference.
Tarez Hepburn's 28 points led the Panthers offence, while Kemel Archer was one board away from a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds.
With a few games in hand, Durham is now two points out of a playoff spot as they prepare for back-to-back home games next weekend. They welcome the Algonquin Thunder on Friday night before an afternoon game against the La Cité Coyotes on Saturday. Tip-off is 8 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
