Lords sweep season series against Conestoga

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women's softball team picked up a pair of wins tonight at Durham Field, 7-1 and 7-6, to sweep their season series over the Conestoga Condors.

Ashley Black (Waterloo, Ont.) was the starting pitcher for the first game of the doubleheader for the Lords and got off to a hot start retiring the first three batters in a matter of only minutes. Heading into the bottom of the opening inning, Jaimie Clarke (Elmvale, Ont.) hit an early RBI to give Sabrina Stalteri (Vaughan, Ont.) her first run of the game.

Durham took advantage of their bats again in the second inning as runs from Melissa McKnight (Brampton, Ont.) and Caleigh Coels (Duncan, B.C.) extended the host's lead to 3-0.

Conestoga found their way to the scoreboard with a run in the top of the third inning, and nearly earned more runs later in the inning, but was stopped by a highlight-reel catch from Ashley Wallace (Coldwater, Ont.) along the third base line after a Condor hit a rocket off her bat.

While the game was relatively close for the first five innings, things changed as Durham sent three runners across home plate to take a 7-1 lead.

The Condors failed to chip away at their deficit in the top of the seventh, giving the Lords a 7-1 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.

Black pitched a complete game, only giving up one run on five hits. In her seven-inning performance, she struck out five of the 27 batters faced. Offensively, Coels finished with two hits, two runs and an RBI, while Scott had a run on two hits, two walks and an RBI.

Game two saw Emily Hill (Ohsweken, Ont.) get the starting pitching duty for the Lords. In five innings pitched, Hill gave up five runs on 11 hits, walking one batter and striking out two. Black made her second appearance of the doubleheader to face 11 batters over the final two innings, only giving up one run on three hits.

The game looked to be a low scoring one as the scoreboard read 0-0 heading into the fourth inning, but Conestoga would take a commanding three run lead. In the bottom half of the inning, the Lords shortened the margin by scoring a pair of runs of their own. Spectators saw another five-run inning in the fifth, except this time it was the Condors who only scored two while Durham picked up a trio of runs to tie the game at five.

Heading into the seventh and final inning, Conestoga had re-acquired a one-run lead looking to split the doubleheader. That was until Marina Christie (Pickering, Ont.) hit a walk-off triple to send a pair of teammates across home plate to pick up a 7-6 victory for the Lords.

After picking up two wins on the road against Conestoga a week ago, the Durham Lords sweep the Condors in the four-game season series.

The Durham College women's softball team go on the road to Ottawa this weekend to participate in the Canadian Collegiate Softball Association (CCSA) national championship. Their first game is on Friday, Oct. 6 at 12 p.m. against the University of Regina. The Lords return to OCAA regular season action in Hamilton on Tuesday, Oct. 10 for a doubleheader against Mohawk.
