OSHAWA, Ont. – After an extended delay – pushing the tip-off back over an hour and a half – due to weather, the Durham College men's basketball team squandered a chance to get a leg up in the OCAA east region playoff race as a 12-point lead slipped away in a 93-84 loss to the Centennial Colts.
With four games remaining after tonight, three of Durham's games are against teams they're fighting for a playoff spot with – making the loss to Centennial mean a little more. That said, the Lords will still need wins down the stretch to play a qualifying game.
In the loss,
Brandon Halliburton (Brampton, Ont.) finished with 21 points to lead Durham's offence.
Funsho Dimeji (Malton, Ont.) put up 18 points, followed by
Julian Hinckson Jr. (Ajax, Ont.) who added 13.
On the opposite end of the high-scoring game, Alex Hagoriles finished with 20 points.
He was helped by Marko Curic and Paul Walwyn, who scored 15 and 14 respectively. The Colts had three other plays in double-digit scoring as they moved into third in the OCAA east region. Regardless of where they finish, they will hold a spot at the championship as hosts.
Similar to the women's team in Kingston, the third quarter made the difference for the Lords. Up 48-44 at halftime, the Colts had already started to chip away at their lead as Durham's largest lead of 12 points (44-32) disappeared in the second quarter.
Centennial outscored the Lords 25-17 and 24-19 in the final quarters en route to their nine-point victory.
Tuesday's cancelled game against the Loyalist Lancers will be played Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre at 8 p.m. Before that, the Lords will travel to Barrie on Tuesday, Feb. 14 to face the Georgian Grizzlies.
On Friday, they're in Peterborough to take on the Fleming Knights.
