PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – With only seven players in their line-up due to an altercation with Georgian earlier in the week, the Durham Lords men's basketball team pulled out a gutsy 64-56 win over the Fleming Knights on Friday.
With the win Durham (9-9) moves into fifth place in the OCAA east region standings, tied with the Canadore Panthers (9-11) with 18 points. Durham will close out the regular season with games against Loyalist (8-10) and St. Lawrence (8-10), both of which are chasing the Lords and Panthers for the final two playoff spots.
Durham will host the Lancers on Saturday night at the CRWC with tip-off set for 8 p.m. Durham can clinch a playoff position with a victory.
The Lords defence was the difference maker in the first quarter as they held the Knights to just three points. Holding a 20-3 after 10 minutes, Fleming would attempt to chip away at the lead but they could never overcome the large deficit.
Funsho Dimeji (Malton, Ont.) shot over 50 per cent from the floor as he was 10-for-19 for 24 points while adding six rebounds and two assists.
Julian Hinckson Jr. (Ajax, Ont.) also had a big night going 6-for-12 for 15 points in 33 minutes of court time.
Head coach
Desmond Rowley needed players to step up with a limited line-up at his disposal and
Trea Lawson (Whitby, Ont.) did exactly that. Lawson hauled in nine boards, well over his 3.5 average this season while managing to score eight points in 38 minutes.
Leading the way for the Knights was Taylor Robinson and Nathan Mmudibo who had 17 points apiece.
Durham will look to get back into the playoffs after missing out by one game in 2015-16. The year prior, the Lords won an OCAA bronze medal, their first since winning the OCAA and CCAA titles in 1997.
