Lords fall to Vikings to wrap up conference play

OSHAWA, Ont. – A loss in their final game of the regular season wasn't the end of the road for the Durham College men's basketball team.

They will now prepare for their OCAA qualifying game in London against the Fanshawe Falcons after falling 73-64 to the St. Lawrence Vikings on Tuesday night in Oshawa.

The Vikings and Lords have become rivals over the last few years, especially after playing each other twice – including the bronze medal game, which Durham won – at the 2015 OCAA men's basketball championship.

This season the team's split their series as Durham won 66-50 in Kingston, while St. Lawrence continued the road team success by winning in Oshawa.

One of the OCAA's best was tough to stop at the CRWC as Jaz Bains scored 29 points, with six boards to lead the Vikings to their victory, which could earn them a playoff spot pending the result of Wednesday's game between the Loyalist and Centennial.

On Durham's side Brandon Halliburton (Brampton, Ont.) continued to lead the Lords offence as he put up 26 points in the loss.

Julian Hinckson Jr. (Ajax, Ont.) and Devante Nunes (Ajax, Ont.) scored 12 and 10 points respectively.

The Lords finish the regular season with a 10-10 record, which puts them back in the playoffs after missing the cutoff last year. Their last appearance in a qualifying game was in 2012 against the Mohawk Mountaineers, a game they lost 90-65, while making the championship in back-to-back seasons in 2014 and 2015.

With Tuesday being the final home game of the year, prior to tip-off, Durham recognized their two graduating seniors, Aaron Bowyer (St. Catharines, Ont.) and Juon Nicholson (Malton, Ont.).
