LONDON, Ont. – The Durham College men's basketball team had their season come to an end after Chris Parker of Fanshawe hit a three-pointer with 0.3 seconds left to give the Falcons a 68-65 victory.
The win sends Fanshawe to the OCAA championship that will take place at Centennial College next week while the Lords failed to qualify for the championship for the second straight year after winning a bronze medal in 2015.
With Fanshawe holding their largest lead of the game in the fourth quarter (51-45), Durham began chip away winning the battles in the paint led by
Funsho Dimeji (Malton, Ont.) who hit key back-to-back jumpers to put Durham within two in the final minutes.
Dimeji would be called upon again with 14 seconds left as he was fouled while shooting with Durham down 65-63. He would convert on both free throws, tying the game up.
After a Falcons timeout, Parker would hold onto the ball as the clock ran down and fired up a last-second contested three-pointer that turned up to be nothing but net.
With 0.3 seconds left,
Brandon Halliburton (Brampton, Ont.) threw up a desperation three but failed to score.
Dimeji led Durham in scoring with 17 points to go along with four rebounds and two steals.
Jeremiah Mensah (Bowmanville, Ont.) had 16 points and nine rebounds while Halliburton had 13 points.
Lex Van Iperen had 22 points for Fanshawe while Parker ended up with 16 points with his only three-pointer being the game-winning shot.
This marks the third time in four seasons that Durham qualified for the OCAA postseason.
With only two players graduating, the Lords are looking to be contenders in the 2017-18 season with head coach
Desmond Rowley looking to attract some key additions to his line-up.
