OSHAWA, Ont. – A strong outing by the Durham College men's basketball team wasn't enough as the fourth-place Algonquin Thunder earned a 79-73 victory over the Lords on Friday night.
In a game where there was only one lead change, Algonquin won all but the fourth quarter. Durham's slow, but steady, comeback attempt in the final ten minutes wasn't enough as the 65-52 lead for the Thunder after three quarters proved to be enough.
A large part of the Thunder's success was Shymar Brewster's season-high five threes and 30 points. The Lords were unable to shut him down from the outside as he put up 15 points in each half.
For Durham,
Brandon Halliburton's (Brampton, Ont.) 26 points led the way in the loss.
Funsho Dimeji's (Malton, Ont.) 13 points and nine rebounds were the next best effort for the Lords, as he was just one board short of a double-double.
The playoff picture is similar for Durham as they head into Saturday's game against the last-place La Cité Coyotes. The Lords are two points out of the sixth and final playoff spot, with a game in hand on the Loyalist Lancers – who Durham plays on Tuesday night at home.
Durham is also four points back of the St. Lawrence Vikings, with two games in hand. They play the Vikings on Feb. 21 at the CRWC to wrap up their regular season.
Tip-off on Saturday against La Cité is 3 PM at the CRWC in Gyms 1/2.
