BELLEVILLE, Ont. - Despite dropping all four contests at the second OCAA east tournament of the season on Saturday, the Durham Lords women's rugby offence showed promise against strong competition in the eastern division.
Durham opened the day slow, falling 41-12 to the St. Lawrence Vikings.
Victoria Browne (Pickering, Ont.) and
Rachel Philip (Courtice, Ont.) scored the Lords tries, while
Taylor Lantaigne (Whitby, Ont.) kicked one convert.
However, the Lords rebounded versus an undefeated Algonquin Thunder losing by a narrow margin of 17-10. Challenging the first-place team from Ottawa, Durham held strong, keeping within striking distance throughout the entirety of the morning matchup.
Jahmiia Fari (Oshawa, Ont.) and
Carly Warren (Courtice, Ont.) each scored a try.
The Lords offence continued to find points after struggling in the early season, carrying a 12-5 lead over the host Loyalist Lancers at halftime of their third game. Durham conceded two late tries to drop a 22-12 decision though narrowly missing out on their second win of the season. Browne added two more tries to her day, while Lantaigne kicked another convert
The women's rugby squad showed clear signs of improvement throughout the day, ending the afternoon with their highest single game output. Durham would fall 26-20 in the final match of the day versus the Fleming Knights. Browne (2), Fari and Lantaigne all scored tries for the Lords.
