Box Score OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College men's basketball team extended their winning streak to six games with an 88-70 win over the Algonquin Thunder to close out the season series.
The Lords came into this game looking for revenge after an upset 90-80 loss in Ottawa earlier in the season on Oct. 28, 2017.
Before tonight's game, Durham had conceded the second least points against in the Ontario Collegiate Athletic Association (OCAA) and their elite defence came to light early in the game. Algonquin failed to put a point on the scoreboard for the first 5:26 of the game.
The referees' whistles were barely used on both sides in the opening quarter after only two fouls were issued. After a mostly low-scoring opening 10 minutes, the Lords racked up several points in the final minute to lead 20-8 through ten minutes of play.
Quarter number two wasn't favourable for the Thunder as the Lords outscored their guests 25-12 to more than double Algonquin's point total – 45-20.
Three Lords in particular accounted for 84 per cent of the team's total points in the half, as
Brandon Halliburton (Brampton, Ont.) led the way with 14 points while
Andre Barrow (Markham, Ont.) and
Romareo Stephenson (Markham, Ont.) tallied 12 points each.
Algonquin had an exceptional showing in the third quarter chipping away at a previous 25-point deficit. Heading into the final ten minutes of play, Durham led by 12 points 62-50.
The fourth quarter was consistent in both directions and the Lords went on to win 88-70 following a high scoring 26-20 quarter in Durham's favour.
Halliburton led the team with 25 points, eight assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Julian Hinckson Jr. (Ajax, Ont.) also reached double digit territory with ten points in just under half an hour of play. Hinckson Jr. also had a pair on big dunks that got the crowd out of their seats.
Funsho Dimeji (Malton, Ont.) hauled in a game high 16 rebounds in the win.
Improving to 13-5, Durham moves into a tie with Centennial for third place in the OCAA East region with a game in hand.
The Lords won't have much time to rest as they prepare for a Sunday afternoon game on Feb. 18 at home against the La Cité Coyotes. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
Prior to Saturday's match, Durham honoured three graduating seniors including
Tyler Henry (Pickering, Ont.), Dimeji and
Trea Lawson (Whitby, Ont.)
